SMBs in India to Invest about U.S.$640 Million on Packaged Software This Year

Small and medium businesses (up to 999 employees) in India are on track to invest about US$ 640 million on buying packaged software this year, up more than 25% over what they invested in all of 2006. Spending on databases, accounting, networking, productivity and system software will account for more than 90% of the total software spending by SMBs this year, according to the latest report by New York-based Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc.

"We expect the Indian IT market to maintain this bullish trend because of increased IT awareness among SMBs," says Nirupam Chaudhuri, Research Manager with AMI Partners. "SMB users have become more alert and they know what they need to be able to accelerate their business. A small percentage of IT-savvy SMBs have progressed to the third wave of IT adoption and are now demanding tailor-made solutions with superior support services." AMI defines the third wave of IT adoption as a stage of "Extending the Enterprise", where due to adoption of advanced infrastructure solutions there is improved collaboration and closeness to business partners.

American Express Targets 'Maverick' Purchasing, Supplier Overcharges

CatalogPro service puts approved purchasing programs online. Contract Audit & Recovery service spots overspending and seeks refunds.

By Doug Henschen

Supply chain automation and purchasing systems have done a great job of controlling corporate spending — more precisely, direct spending on materials, products and services tied to the cost of goods and services sold. What they typically haven't touched, however, is indirect spending — things like office supplies and temporary help that are often procured outside of approved purchasing channels and contracts.

"This kind of purchasing can represent 80 percent of the transactions yet only 20 percent of the spend," says Rion Needs, "It's like herding cats."

The former Chief Procurement Officer at American Express, Needs now heads the company's S2S (Source-to-Settle) Procurement and Compliance Solutions unit, which hopes to help companies improve control over this last frontier of purchasing.

Report: U.S. Faces Terrorist Threat

WASHINGTON, D.C. A new intelligence report from the 16 U.S. spy agencies shows the U.S. faces a "persistent and evolving" terrorist threat in the next three years.

The report says al Qaeda has stepped up efforts to sneak operatives into America. It also reveals more training of terrorists along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow says the report shows this is no time for America to let down its guard.
