At Terrible Herbst, a 90-store chain based in Las
At Terrible Herbst, a 90-store chain based in Las Vegas, the vendor-based, back-office system, connections from store-level to headquarters, and business intelligence technologies were not up to par with what the company was trying to achieve. To fix the issues, two employees decided to take matters into their own hands. Eric Saint-Marc and Michael McMclure, both enterprise application architects at Terrible Herbst, worked in their spare time to create proprietary systems, and 18 months later, it is all up and running smoothly. "Our CIO told me to sit down and review our issues because we had to fix them," Saint-Marc recalled. "We had a company come in and do an assessment for us to look at all our problems and see what we were missing. I felt it was something we could do in-house based on my experience." Saint-Marc and McMclure created a back-office system, which runs with the Chevron Nucleus POS system, and they also created an application that connects to SEQUEL Server 2005 for reporting.
Business Objects Acquisitions Boost Q2
Business Objects almost tripled its second-quarter earnings, but has issued a weak forecast for its current quarter. The business intelligence software maker reported net income for the quarter of $21.6m (22 cents EPS), nearly three times up from $7.9m (7 cents EPS) a year ago. Revenue for quarter rose 23% to $363.2m, from $294.5m a year ago. Importantly, license revenue, a key indicator of organic growth, was also up 21% in the quarter to $149m. Services revenue including maintenance, consulting, and training, jumped 25% to $214m in the same period. Product-wise, Business Objects' newer enterprise performance management product line, based on technologies acquired from SRC Software and more recently Cartesis, continued to gain traction in the quarter. Business Objects also said its enterprise information management suite, which includes data integration, federated query, and data quality tools, is also starting to sell into its traditional BI accounts.
