Gulf Breeze officials study accident-fee

Gulf Breeze's mayor and City Council tabled a vote Monday on an ordinance designed to recoup the cost of investigating accidents. The ordinance is expected to be discussed and voted on when the council meets again Aug. 20. The mayor and council asked for more time to review the ordinance after receiving a copy at Monday's meeting."We didn't get a copy of the ordinance until the last minute," Mayor Lane Gilchrist said. "It wasn't handed out until it came up on the agenda."If the ordinance is approved, the fee will be collected from drivers' insurance companies.Other cities across the country, including some inFlorida, have implemented similar ordinances. But in some cities the idea was rejected after it was met with strong opposition. Here is how the fee collection typically works:A company bills the insurance companies of drivers determined to be at fault in accidents. If the insurance company won't pay and the at-fault driver lives in the city where the crash happened, the city writes the fee off.If the insurance company refuses to pay and the at-fault driver is not a resident of the city where the accident occurred, the company sends a bill to the driver. The amount of the collection fees was not included in the ordinance given to the council on Monday, City Manager Edwin "Buz" Eddy said.Dayton, Ohio-based Cost Recovery Corp.

Distribution Channel Growth

We've got multiple projects under way to support growth as we offer more of our products through more channels. In addition to new technology, this effort involves business process changes through automation. We're installing Oracle analytics on top of a Siebel CRM initiative to give our sales managers more intelligence into how effective they're being with their time along with conducting an RFP to find an alternative to a homegrown fund and accounting system that needs to be replaced for added flexibility.

Enterprise Data Access There are efforts around data management to allow users in the investment management area to have access to data to improve performance.

Money talks; now, if only county, state and federal officials did, too

DOES COLD CASH stop terrorism? You might have thought it did if you heard the Halleluiah chorus from Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. and other North Jersey politicians last week as they celebrated an increase in anti-terror funding for northern New Jersey.

The funding increase seemed even more significant because it came the same week that a U.S. intelligence report said Osama bin Ladin's al-Qaida network had regained much of its pre-Sept. 11 strength and may be poised to attack again.

The federal Department of Homeland Security "is finally realizing the real risks and vulnerabilities facing our state," Pascrell said, in announcing increases in several grants to the area.

Yes, money talks. For one thing, it buys plenty of anti-terror gadgets, from new radios to high-tech suits to protect cops and firefighters from chemical bombs.

Wake up to the benefits of shadow IT

Gone are the days when IT helpdesks filled their days answering simple queries about sending e-mails to multiple addresses or how best to search for something on the internet.

With 45% of internet users in Europe now online every day of the week and an estimated 55 million people taking the next step onto web 2.0, IT literacy has grown enormously among employees, and is almost ubiquitous for those under the age of 30.

This rapid shift in user's IT expertise has created fresh challenges for today's CIO. With increased user demand, impatience with available software capabilities and an office full of "IT DIYers", this new IT literate workforce demands not just more, but something different from their CIOs, and is becoming ever less satisfied with basic enterprise systems.
