The public network is getting interesting again. In the early '90s, the buzz was about the Internet's rise and the advent of frame relay. Today, it's about PBT, T-MPLS and next-generation networks, such as Verizon's FiOS and BT's 21CN.

Wade through all the acronyms, and it becomes clear that carriers and network equipment providers are focusing on injecting more intelligence into public networks. That is making them more reliable and responsive, as well as capable of handling a variety of business-critical applications. On tap are managed services for security, storage, collaboration, disaster recovery and other business essentials.

Panorama Puts Spotlight on Proactive BI

Canadian business intelligence software maker Panorama Software has pushed the latest version of its "proactive" NovaView software into beta phase.

Branded as NovaView Spotlight, the software comes with a proactive twist that basically embeds key metrics into business processes via desktop applications like Microsoft Outlook and Office. The aim is to create a "smart personal dashboard" in an Outlook or Office task pane that allows knowledge workers to hone in on relevant business data for decision making.

Panorama said the system avoids complex BI tools and expertise since it uses existing and well-understood Microsoft technologies. NovaView is built on Microsoft's SQL Server Analysis Services.

"It's the first application to take key insights and metrics and proactively push them to information workers without bombarding them with large reports," said Eynav Azarya, CEO of Toronto-based Panorama.
